Redcar was a 140 acres (930 x 800 yards) aerodrome which opened in 1915, primarily as a flying school for the RNAS/RAF, but also saw use as a Home Defence Station for RNAS as well as a Marine Operations Station.

Hangarage was provided by three aeroplane sheds (180 x 60 feet), one aeroplane shed (200 x 100 feet) and three Bessonneau hangars.
